Solarium East Wall

The upper east wall of the solarium contains an inlaid tile pediment of Phoebus Apollo driving the Sun Chariot. The figure is sun-tanned brown and the four horses are ivory with gold harness and reins. Phoebus Apollo, as he was known to the Romans (or Helios of Sol, the Sun God in Greek mythology), is depicted starting his daily journey across the path of the heavens.
